Tooth Extraction![]() What is a Tooth Extraction?Tooth extraction is a dental procedure where the tooth is completely removed from its place in the jawbone. This procedure may be performed on any tooth in the mouth, from incisors to molars, depending on the specific needs of the patient. When is Tooth Extraction Necessary? We will always try to save your tooth first; however, tooth extractions are typically recommended for these conditions: Severe DecayWhen a tooth is too decayed to be restored with a filling or crown. Advanced Periodontal DiseaseWhen periodontal gum disease has caused too much bone loss around a tooth to keep it healthy. Dental TraumaWhen a tooth is too damaged to be saved. Orthodontic TreatmentSometimes teeth may be removed to create space for proper alignment. Impacted Wisdom TeethThird molars may be removed because they are impacted, or to prevent future issues. InfectionWhen tooth infection is severe and cannot be treated with root canal therapy. The Extraction ProcedureA tooth extraction typically follows these steps: AnesthesiaWe administer local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. Loosening the toothUsing special instruments, we gently loosen the tooth from the surrounding bone and ligaments. RemovalThe tooth is removed from its socket. Cleaning and closingThe socket is cleaned, and stitches may be used to close the gum. Types of ExtractionsA simple extraction is performed on visible teeth using instruments to elevate and grasp the tooth. A surgical extraction is required for teeth that have broken off at the gum line, or haven't fully emerged. A small incision is made in the gum to access and remove the tooth. Duration of the ProcedureThe length of a tooth extraction procedure varies. Simple extractions typically take around 30 minutes per tooth. Surgical extractions may take anywhere from 30 minutes up to an hour or longer for impacted wisdom teeth. Multiple extractions in one session will increase the procedure time. Recovery TipsTo ensure proper healing and minimize complications, we advise patients to do the following:
Potential ComplicationsTooth extractions are safe, but every procedure comes with potential complications such as: Dry SocketA dry socket happens when the blood clot fails to form, or is dislodged. InfectionInfection is rare with proper care, but possible. Nerve InjuryIn rare cases, nerves near the extraction site may be affected.
