Teeth Whitening![]() ProcedureThe procedure is used to remove stains caused by food, drinks, or smoking. Whitening also lightens teeth that have yellowed with age, and brightens teeth that have been discolored by medications or other causes. Patients choose teeth whitening to boost their confidence and improve the appearance of their smile. MethodsThere are three methods of teeth whitening. Professional In-Office WhiteningThis procedure is performed by our team, and starts with the application of a protective gel to the gums. We then coat the teeth with a high concentration peroxide gel, and use a special light to activate the whitening agent. We repeat this process in multiple sessions that take about 20 minutes to complete. Results may be noticeable as soon as after the first treatment. At HomeAt home professional whitening uses custom fitted trays. A lower concentration peroxide gel is applied to the trays and they are fitted onto the teeth. Patients are instructed to wear these for a specified amount of time each day, with a total duration of one to two weeks. Results come faster than over-the-counter options, but slower than in-office whitening. Over-The-CounterOver-the-counter whitening products include whitening strips, gels, or toothpastes that contain lower concentrations of peroxide. These are less effective than professional treatments. The low concentration of over-the-counter whitening takes multiple applications to produce noticeable results. Please note that after the procedure, some patients may experience temporary tooth sensitivity or gum irritation. These side effects typically subside within a few days. RecoveryPatients resume normal activities immediately after their whitening treatment, but are advised to avoid consuming dark colored foods and beverages for 24 to 48 hours after treatment to prevent stains from returning. How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last? The duration of whitening results varies. Treatments last much longer when patients practice good oral hygiene, and avoid consumption of things that stain such as coffee and red wine. A round of professional in-office treatments can last one to three years, but at home treatments may need to be repeated more frequently. Over-the-counter products generally provide results that do not last as long as professional treatments. Maintenance
Please note that teeth whitening is not permanent. The results fade over time, but proper maintenance extends the life of the treatment. RestrictionsTeeth whitening is safe, but not suitable for everyone. Pregnant women and those with sensitive teeth, gum disease, or worn enamel may not be able to undergo a whitening procedure. In addition, whitening treatments do not work on dental restorations. Please contact Columbia Dental at (860) 743-9032 for further details, or to schedule an appointment. |
