Porcelain Crown

The most important aspect of crown placement is that it rescues the natural tooth. Crowns prevent teeth from further damage, decay, and extraction.

What is a Porcelain Crown?

A porcelain crown is a cap placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Porcelain is a top quality ceramic material designed for longevity. These crowns mimic the look and feel of natural teeth, and are a popular restoration for the visible areas of the mouth.

Purpose of Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain crowns protect a weak tooth from damage, or restore an already broken tooth. They cover and support a tooth with a large filling, and cover misshapen or severely discolored teeth. In addition, crowns are used to complete a dental implant, hold a dental bridge in place, and to restore a tooth after root canal treatment.

The Procedure

Porcelain crown placement typically requires two dental visits. In the first, we examine and prepare the tooth, take impressions of the patient's teeth, and place a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth. In the second visit, the temporary crown is removed, the permanent crown is checked for fit, match, and bite alignment, then cemented into place.

Recovery Information

Patients may experience some sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures for a few days after the procedure. Avoid hard or sticky foods for at least 24 hours to allow the cement to set. Most of our patients return to normal activities immediately after the procedure. However, we may provide further instructions for optimal healing.

Longevity of Porcelain Crowns

With proper care, porcelain crowns can last between 10 to 15 years, sometimes even longer. The lifespan of a crown depends on the patient's oral hygiene habits, if they grind or clench their teeth, other habits like chewing pens or biting fingernails, and general wear.

How to Maintain Your Porcelain Crown

To ensure the longevity of your porcelain crown and maintain good oral health, follow these tips:

Practice good oral hygiene

Brush twice daily and floss regularly, paying special attention to the area around the crown.

Avoid hard foods

Porcelain crowns are durable, but they can still chip or crack if subjected to excessive force. Avoid biting and chewing anything hard, such as ice or hard candy.

Use a night guard

If you grind your teeth at night, wear a night guard to protect your crown and teeth.

Regular dental checkups

Professional cleanings and checkups are crucial to maintain a crown, and oral health overall.

Be gentle when flossing

Use gentle up and down motions when flossing around your crown.
