Dentures![]() There are a number of causes for tooth loss. Perhaps the patient suffered a trauma to the mouth or face or succumbed to periodontal disease or even suffered from widespread decay. Regardless of how a patient loses their teeth, dentures can easily and quickly restore their smile and lost tooth functionality. Complete dentures replace the entire upper or lower jaw with artificial teeth while partial dentures merely span the empty space left by losing only a few teeth. Any patient who has been struggling with their artificial teeth needs should come see us to find out the available options and determine which one is the best for their situation. We are located at Columbia Dental and look forward to helping you. Different Types of DenturesAs is the case with so many dental procedures, there are a couple of different options available for denture placement. The two types of dentures are known as immediate dentures and conventional dentures. Both types of dentures are placed in the oral cavity following tooth extraction and careful oral cavity preparation. For those patients looking for conventional dentures, they will need to wait approximately two to three months after having their teeth extracted before they can receive the dentures. The recovery time is largely dependent upon how healthy the oral cavity is. Immediate dentures are quite different. There is not a two to three month waiting period. Unlike conventional dentures, immediate dentures are placed directly following tooth extraction. With this particular type of denture, patients will likely have to return for follow-up visits to adjust the denture as the oral cavity heals and shifts. Why Get Dentures? There are multiple reasons to get dentures. Anyone suffering from periodontal disease can have their appearance become altered by losing the supportive structure of the teeth behind the lips and cheeks. The fewer teeth they have the more complicated eating becomes too. With dentures, that missing support is restored and their lips and cheeks are shifted back to their normal position. They can also go back to eating and speaking normally. How Often Do I Need to Replace My Dentures? The American Dental Association suggests dentures are replaced approximately every five to seven years. This is just a guideline and a suggestion. In many cases, dentures can last considerably longer than that. The dentures should be regularly inspected for signs of wear or damage to ensure that they are still viable.
