Dental Bonding

Patient looking at their teeth with their dentistDental bonding is a cosmetic dentistry procedure that improves the appearance of your teeth. We start with the application of a tooth colored resin material to the teeth, harden it with a special light, and then shape and polish it further for a seamless look. The result looks natural, and addresses various cosmetic dental issues such as chips or cracks.

What is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a non-invasive cosmetic dental procedure that uses a durable plastic material called composite resin to repair or improve the appearance of teeth. The resin is carefully matched to the color of your natural teeth to ensure a natural blend between the two. This material is then shaped, molded, and polished to achieve the desired look.

What is Dental Bonding Used For?

Dental bonding is a versatile procedure that can address several cosmetic and minor structural issues, that include:
•  Repairing chipped or cracked teeth
•  Closing small gaps between teeth
•  Changing the shape of teeth
•  Covering discolored teeth
•  Protecting exposed tooth roots due to receding gums
•  Filling small cavities
•  Making teeth appear longer

The versatility of dental bonding makes it an attractive option for patients who want to improve their smile with a less invasive procedure.

Procedure

The dental bonding procedure is simple and usually completed in a single office visit. Here's what to expect:

Preparation

Little to no prep is needed. Anesthesia is typically not necessary, unless the bonding is being used to fill a cavity.

Shade Selection

We use a shade guide to select a composite resin color that matches your natural tooth color.

Surface Preparation

The surface of the tooth is roughened slightly and a conditioning liquid is applied. This helps the bonding material adhere to the tooth.

Application Resin

The tooth colored putty-like resin is applied, molded, and smoothed to achieve the desired shape.

Curing

A special light or laser is used to harden the material.

Finishing Touches

After the material hardens, we trim, shape, and polish the bonded tooth further, in order to match the sheen of the rest of the tooth surface and the other natural teeth.

The entire process typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth.

Recovery

No recovery time is needed. Once the procedure is complete, you can resume your normal activities immediately. However, you should follow these guidelines:
•  Avoid staining foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, and red wine for the first 48 hours after the procedure.
•  Refrain from smoking for at least 48 hours.
•  Practice good oral hygiene to maintain the bonding and your overall oral health.
•  Be gentle with your bonded teeth for the first few days because the resin may chip if you bite down on hard foods or objects.

How Long Does Dental Bonding Last?

The longevity of dental bonding varies. It depends on several factors such as your oral health habits, and the location of the bonded tooth. On average, dental bonding lasts between three to 10 years before a touch up procedure or replacement is necessary.
